The only things that really changed in this update are all to do with how filenames are handled. To deal with linux and being case sensitive. Things to think about are filename casing, filenames with special characters in, filenames starting/ending with numbers, foldernames...

It doesn't need the portal 2 engine, the texture and model formats just need updating - which I'm sure they will. Also ridiculous to suggest that the portal 2 engine wouldn't support HL2 weapons. They're not in the engine, they're in the game code.
