Community Update 193

Watery worlds, desks you can drive on, and more.

17 July 2018

For the second week in a row, Veysel Kara has made a header image that made my job easier than it should be. I had to do some work, as it's a banner, so I had to clumsily crop it. At least I felt wrong in doing so. Here's the full thing.

If you listen to the wind, you can hear the sound of Veys cursing my name.

Not a lot has happened this week on the tool side of things. Neither Dezinated's Extended SDK nor k1lly0u's Standalone Map Editor were updated this week, which hasn't stopped the community from digging deep and making stuff. And I'm told k1lly0u has been busy, just not releasey.

Tutorials

Snowballfred has a series of short tutorials that talk you through the very basics of how to get started. In this case it's with Dezinated's extended SDK. There are a few sections that shows you how to set things up, so you'd do well to watch them, but I'm showing the editor in action as it's by far the most compelling part. Here's a playlist for the whole series.

Here's a question that gets asked a lot: how to your own server to test maps.

Rusty Pirates

Vice has continued work on his Rusty Pirates map. He's been using a combination of tools to craft a water world map, where travel is largely done by boat. He's got a cove so far. If you sub to his channel, you can watch live-streams of all the map being put together.

Waterworld

Maps are hard to link to right now, because they're often just being tested, so they're offline a lot. And our in-game server browser isn't tuned for them. Aside from direct links in the Rust Cartographers Discord, I usually just search Battlemetrics for custom maps and hope the server is running. That's where I found the Custom Waterworld map, where the monuments sit on a flooded plane. The lighthouse tilts to one side, the dome pokes up like an iceberg (most of it below the surface), and the launch site's top floors can be boated through. It's also an active map, where people have been making bases.

You can join with connect wtfux.bot.nu:28015 in the F1 menu.

Ireland

I also discovered Buster Dylan's Ireland map.

Fraxville

I spent some time on a map that Shadowfrax built. I mean, it wasn't really a map. More of a thing, but he realised you could plonk a giant table down and drive all over it.

And Banana Duck recorded some antics on there.

I love that even with the limitations of the current set-up, there's no limits to what people are making.

If you want to see Rust at its best, come watch Bizzlesnaff being calming paint bro Bob Rust. He manages to turn a rather rude pair of bois into allies while making art.

His friend Ser Winter went darker, and made Voldemort.

On twitter, Ryan Stevenson made some Rust stamps.

Over on Steam, jesse.B̷L̷ turned a screenshot into art.

Calming. Nice.

A lot of the value of a raid cam is in how well the video was made. riZZa Gaming is one of the few people out there still making raid cams, and this most recent video shows just how far he's come. It's well shot, very nicely edited, but lets the raid tell the story. Swoops and swooshes are minimal.

A dying art.

Over on reddit, they're taking a census of Rust players. It's a Google form that asks you about your preferred... well, everything. As well as your least liked stuff. Go click.

More from Banana Duck and Shadowfrax, in the shape of a very well made cinematic short. Not going to attempt to contextualise this. Just watch.

I always knew Alan was a wrong 'un.

This week's skin favourites of Xtab have a tonne of detail. I do like the Peacemaker skin.

And there's another demonic door. We really need a door exorcist.

Pitch Dank made a cartoon.

We patched out a joke :(

Think you're working on something awesome? Tell me all about it. Share your map designs, show off a game-mode from your server, let us see your cool base.

There's a dedicated forum, or you can fish for upvotes in the subreddit. I also shuffle around the the Steam Community, so feel free to show me to things from there. You can follow and respond to Rust on Twitter, and I'm on there as well.
