This week has been an amazing week for builders. Maybe there's something in the air? I've actually had to jettison a few to make room in the post. There's only so much scroll left in the wheel, it seems. Let's start with the build from the top of the page, eh?
Moon Castle
These dudes have just casually built something that should be in Skyrim. It's a castle that feels like the focal point of a server. People would use it to navigate, and Michael Palin would be discussing social systems in the mud below.
Village
This deathmatch arena is interesting: most people would build on a flat plane, but datan0ir's village is clinging to the side of a hill with a stream running through it. It's almost too pretty to shoot up.
EVoL's arena
"Its 44x48 not including the extra compartment that encompasses the bridge. I was about 90% done with it before I was made an admin on the server. Of all the resources used only about 100k metal and stone and 200k wood were spawned in for use." Well done, EVoL, you only abused admin powers a tiny bit.
Radtown Remake
Puggy on the Facepunch forums returned to an old classic, remaking the Legacy Radtown using NuRust's building parts.
Freetown
This was dropped on the subreddit by yannisv and gained lots of love. I can see why: it has a very lived in feel, which is because it is. This is one of the few builds here that lives on a live server and serves a purpose for the builders; everything else is kind of showy offy, or only has a single function.
I have encountered music-spamming Newmans on the servers, but they're generally doing it to act like a pirate radio station with bad intentions. Those people are parrots, not performers, though that guy whose mouth was moving along to Ride of the Valkyries cracked me up. So this is lovely: in order to gain food ans shelter, this player was asked to sing a song. But this didn't end up with the usual public humiliation of a creaky voiced teenager trying to cry. No, this was a Newman with powerful lungs. Thanks to Youtuber Billeh for being there.
As much as I love the singing, the mouth moving to the guitar solo was the best bit. All hail the Queen of Rust performers.
This is enjoyable. A piece of writing about comparing item durability in the real-world to Rust that quickly devolves into relationship worries, injury, and then ends on a twist. It's a really good piece of Rust writing. Go upvote Jayick so we can have some more.
GrymThor's buildings tend to revolve around a canny use of stairs. So far he's encased trees and created rollercoasters. It was inevitable that he'd have some thoughts about the form of stairs in the game.
He decided to build his own, which is the sort of iniative I like to see. After all, I have the entire internet to fill with Rust things. This is his take on spiral staircases, using measurements from the game.
It's all very complicated looking, but he details everything and his decisions as to why he feels they're good ideas in the thread.
The Playrust Server has the beginnings of a classic community. The people there know one another enough to recognise friends and enemies, and will often put aside factional differences for the good of the server. Case in point is Cage Town, the central city of the server. According to on the ground reported Argyle Alligator: "The town is more of a city as it has a large housing district, embassies for neighboring and contributing clans, defensive structures and a full rockfights arena."
To going, just press F1 to enable the console and cut and paste client.connect rustpublic.net:28016. It's the sort of server where you can ask for directions and not immediately die.
Think you're working on something awesome? Tell me all about it. Right now I'm particularly interested to know if where you come from influences your building style. Let me know.
There's a dedicated forum post, or you can fish for upvotes in the Subreddit. I also shuffle around the the Steam Community, so feel free to show me to things from there. You can follow and respond to Rust on Twitter, and I'm on there as well. We also have a dedicated site for suggestions and bug reporting.
I can't respond to everything, but I read every comment and take it all in.
