The header image this week is OceanRoar's "sorta digital art/wallpapery thing", which I believe is the technical term for what they made. It's a 4k piece of art (I'm linking to the comment with the corrected image), so if you have a super-monitor, you can appreciate the full glory lovely Rust vista. If not? Well, it'll still fit, but you should really ask yourself if life is worth it at less than 4k.
We all know chess is the most cultured thing that has ever existed, so it was brave of Pretermit to build a board in Rust. There is no culture in Rust; there is only death. It's not a functional chess board, sadly, because the pieces are immobile, but it's a fun build nonetheless. I particularly like the use of the small furnace for the Bishop. In fact, from now on that's all I'll ever call it. I'd love to come across something like this in the world. Rust can be very utilitarian, so a design that's been made just to be enjoyed would make me so happy.
So says Snaz5 of his old Rust map: 'my direct inspiration was like, the fifth result upon googling "old map."' Which is as good a place to find it as anywhere else, I think. This is Snaz5's server, rendered as a very basic old map. So olde, in fact, that it doesn't even have roads (joke!) and there's an additional 'e'. I really love the landmarks. This is basically a Tolkien map. I wonder what other sorts of map styles could be used (hint hint)?
I'll often prioritise huge raid videos in the community update. They provide lots of entertainment and they make the game look amazing: swooping cameras trailing rockets, the screams of the dying clans, the betrayals, Phedo82 quietly hypnotising everyone... but that's not the day-to-day experience of a lot of players, and that's why I'm showing off aStiffSausage's little video. It's just him trying to survive against a few other people. They're all rather primitive, so the weapons are melee, bows, and a pipe shotgun. But it's compelling in the way that solo play can be. The risk of losing stuff at the very beginning, as you're trying hard to gain a little bit of land, is always the scariest part of the game. Not an admin cam in sight.
That's Battle Royale to those who didn't know. Rust's best mod--where people battle to be the final player on an island that delivery bombs, guns, and slowly squeezes people together--has a new mode: Primitive Mode. I actually covered a video of this last week, but didn't really explain how to play, where to play, or even why. The good news is there's someone who can explain all that: The Grumpy Spanner. There's a few bugs still, but the gist is the main BR Mode, but with restricted weapons. No guns. The bow is the highest tier. As you can see, it's less intense than the higher tier game, but people need to get close so each fight becomes a personal battle. How to play? Search for 'Primitive' in the modded section of the server browser. Take some friends, too.
I am generally terrified when people roleplay Rust in real-life. I can't imagine how you could easily explain to the police why you're wearing a pumpkin on your head and where all the blood came from. "I'm filming a video," just seems like it'd get you into even more trouble, and probably some front pages. MineDatFunky does not share my concern, and has made a video reflecting Rust that impressed the hell out of me. They made t-shirts from the Steam Store, signs, and they also built a huge satellite dish just as a background prop (I assume - it's not like you can fake something like that). He lost all his BP fragments :(.
Just watch. I refuse to provide context for Pitch Dank's latest Rust short. I can't say I expected any of that.
Think you're working on something awesome? Tell me all about it. Now's the time to share your base designs, or get into the growing Raid Cam business, or to make a lovely shirt. There's a dedicated forum post, or you can fish for upvotes in the Subreddit. I also shuffle around the the Steam Community, so feel free to show me to things from there. You can follow and respond to Rust on Twitter, and I'm on there as well. I can't respond to everything, but I read every comment and take it all in.
