Pre-Legacy Rust, how to make the Furnace in real-life, an amazing in-game news channel, and more.

The header is from Rust With Lou, who unearthed a real gem from gaming's glory days. I've no idea how he discovered Rust's secret past--as we have a super injunction in place and Facepunch didn't exist in 1988--but you can see the themes, action, and even the Dome have been around for years. Rust is basically The Shining. Lou just topped 1000 subs. As infrequent as his updates are, he should probably have more subscribers. Go on.
Despite my continued protestations against people making Rust guns in real-life--and, yeah, I'll always post about them because I'm a proud hypocrite--Youtuber GoriachieKluchi has been hard at work crafting Rust weaponry out of real-world items. Not only that, but he's also made the Furnace, which my brain refused to acknowledge until I saw the video of him making it. Until then it was just part of the scene, then I realised he'd made one to make his videos more authentic. And the wooden box as well. That's outstanding. And now the Furnace. This is my favourite because it's so conceptual. He uses it to smelt fake ore. You are the best at whatever it is you do.
PitchDank's take on terrible public news in Rust is amazing. There's lots and lots of swearing, but I refuse to say any more because you need to experience it. The most exciting part? It says it's only the first ep. Oh, the video they suggest watching at the end really is worth watching. It's from 2015 and very buggy, but the Rust Olympics by Holdacious is better than the real-world Olympics. More deaths for one.
If you had access to our Slack channel, you'd know how tough it is to make a tech tree. We're attempting to work out how to display and unlock hundreds of items in a logical manner, which isn't easy. That didn't stop dburden on the Facepunch forums from doing the same. Here's their take on what we're trying to do.
I was bored, so I 5-minute-sketched out an idea I had for the UI that visualizes the tech tree. The drawing is crude, the handwriting is bad, and I don't even know how all of the tech tree stuff is designed. But meh, take it or leave it. I don't care.
That's exactly the kind of enthusiasm we like around here. It reminds me of the Metal Gear Solid V tree. Good job.
It's been fun watching Swemba attempt to make Rust raid cams that are more cinematic. Here a small group takes on a large, well-designed base. You can see him fighting with the difficulties of tracking all the action while trying to keep it well-framed, but that's a skill that'll develop as more of these are made. Perhaps the camera doesn't need to be moving all the time? A few more tips: the music was a bit repetitive and invasive, and I generally think filters are for Instagram food pics.
A surprisingly pretty film about not killing a deer, by MrMemeio. It amazes me what people are capable of with Rust. This definitely isn't vanilla. And that's why you shouldn't be friends with anything or anyone in Rust. You'll only end up crying over their corpse.
You know what? Here's another Rust With Lou video, where he attempts to save his life with penguin facts. I'm annoyed I missed this back in Feb. Sorry to have denied the world this.
Think you're working on something awesome? Tell me all about it. Now's the time to share your base designs, or get into the growing Raid Cam business, or show off a game-mode from your server, or if your server has an interesting theme. There's a dedicated forum post, or you can fish for upvotes in the Subreddit. I also shuffle around the the Steam Community, so feel free to show me to things from there. You can follow and respond to Rust on Twitter, and I'm on there as well. I can't respond to everything, but I read every comment and take it all in.
