Community Update 86

Animated Rust, concept art limbo, Rust guns turned into percussion instruments, and more.

The header is taken from MadnessWorld's Revenge animation. In many ways it's a pretty typical Rust story, just sketched and animated. It was colourful enough for me to set atop the blog. Take a look. The sequel to this, where the guy forgives and forgets, was deemed unsuitable for Rust players and cancelled.
This is what happens when you ask Brunt Force Trauma what a treehouse in Rust would look like. It's a pretty basic idea taken to a ludicrous extreme, then beyond even that and into a heretofore undiscovered dimension where you can, like, hear colours or whatever. Same with meteor showers. They also made a neat horror short about what happens when you visit a place called 'Murrdor Manor'. I always love seeing Rust Youtubers collaborate (do other game communities do that?), and this guest stars Vertiigo and Ser Winter. In hindsight, you should never visit a place with 'Murrdor' or 'Manor' in its name.
I have a thing for maps, so when yannisv popped up on reddit with a thread about having designed a medieval style map based on his server seed, I took a look. He said:
I took the map from Rust IO, deleted all details and preserved the land's outline before adding color and the effects you see. The trees, mountains, the little houses and the grass were found online as brushes. All I had to do was the proper placing. Made the whole thing in an afternoon.
Seems doable. Here's the map in progress. There was talk of a coloured-in version, with political boundaries mapped out on it. I really hope that happens.
We have no shame here on the Rust team, so I'm happy to show you Shadowfrax's new series: Concept Limbo. In it, Rust's pre-eminent horsetorian revisits concepts that we've worked on and shown off, but haven't added to the game yet. He dug his horse-nose into our feedbag of ideas and came away with a mouthful. I love watching the people who make Rust videos diversify with videos like this. Here's the first two installments. Just FYI: concept artists at Facepunch are here to inspire the developers as much as they are here to work to a remit, so there will always be stuff that gets shown off but not picked up. Sometimes it gets pretty far along.
I don't highlight Rust in-game art as much as I should because they're pretty hard to find, but here's some that made it to the Steam Community that I took a liking to. On the left we have Eas3rah 'Plant in a space bubble', which I would totally put on my base wall and invite people over to admire. The painting, not the guests. On the right is xsinick's lovely sunset view, so you can admire the landscape without worrying about stealth bear attacks. There's more on his profile. I'd love to see more of this sort of stuff.
Smoothshoes made this. I've no idea what you call it, but I've been humming the song all day. Rock music?
Think you're working on something awesome? Tell me all about it. Now's the time to share your base designs, or get into the growing Raid Cam business, or show off a game-mode from your server, or if your server has an interesting theme. There's a dedicated forum post, or you can fish for upvotes in the Subreddit. I also shuffle around the the Steam Community, so feel free to show me to things from there. You can follow and respond to Rust on Twitter, and I'm on there as well. I can't respond to everything, but I read every comment and take it all in.
