A look at Rust's smallest islands, how to get your builds into Battle Royale, irradiated penguins, and more.

Most server owners aim for a size that'll support upwards of 50 players. Rust is, after all, a game about people, resources, and personal space. But if you don't care about that you can do some really cool things with a server. BlueSkilly on Reddit decided to mess about with the world size, specifically looking at what the procedrual generation would throw out if the defined size was tiny. The header image is a world sized at 1200, and I want to move there. I suspect others want to deathmatch there, though. There's more in this album.
If anyone else does something similar, do send me your favourite seeds. It's always lovely to see what that game is capable of.
I'm not sure why I'm posting this. Wait, that sounds bad. I'm not sure of the reason I'm posting this because there's more than one. At first I was posting it because of the build: mattrhale on Reddit linked to a theatre on his servers. Have a look at the impressive auditorium.
But did you read the text? That theatre has a purpose that goes way beyond a nice building: Matt is looking for actors to appear on that stage, acting out plays on the weekends. In Rust.
Shows will be short with a small cast. The cast will use local voice (press V) to deliver their lines. The audience will hear clearly. Staff will have access to a team speak server where directions for actors and staff will be delivered, so as not to disturb the audience. The audience will be requested to remain silent during the show, but feel free to use your own team speak to talk. Just don't interrupt the show or disturb the sensitive instruments of the director (actors).
That will definitely work, and it will in no way be raided during a show. Good luck, Matt. Let us know how it goes. I'd nominate Shadowfrax as a potential actor, and Argyle is almost certainly the best person to report on the opening night.
As this screenshot will attest, Battle Royale is the best custom Rust game-mode. Everyone on the server starts off unarmed and naked on the outskirts of the map, and they're slowly forced together by a a contracting circle of radiation. Players will gather loot from the buildings marked on the map, and fight anyone they come across in the hope of being the last person left alive. I've already covered how it plays out in the blog, but if you want to see someone having fun then here's Youtuber Ohmwrecker playing his first round.
As you can see, the game relies on Rust's building tools. All the shacks and builds on the map have been made using them, and why I'm writing about the game is you can now help build those very shacks. Intoxicated also has a Sandbox server, which gives the players unlimited crafting supplies and health to help them create without suffering the consequences. Now if you're on that server and particularly proud of what you've made, you can mark it for possible inclusion on the BR map. Obviously they won't take just any old shack, but there's no harm in building and bragging. Hit the server and press your Middle-Mouse button to find out more.
Two lovely things about Phaedo82's Iceberg Base Build video: his usual insight into building, which actually informed me that you can build on the ice. The other is watching the base being built. He filmed it as a time-lapse, and it's really pretty and relaxing.
Videos like this reminds me that the game isn't always about splitting heads.
