If Rust had character classes, I imagine Architect would probably be a popular choice. I'd happily hire someone to help build me a nice shack, because I seem to make everything ugly and raidable. My lack of practice in that area comes from the fear of being caught outside, so I build something small and crappy and live life like a hermit crab with a persecution complex. This preamble is to introduce you to the Rust Building Planner, a 2D tool that allows you to plan a base without even entering a server.
The ever helpful Frank Walls designed the tool so you can keep your skull intact as you attempt to work out the perfect base design. It'll even tell you the resource cost of what you've made. You can log-in and save what you've made for later, or just work in offline mode. As you can see, you can design some complicated spaces with it, and even use it to practice placing furnaces and the like.
Planned features include sharing your designs to with the community, which is a lovely touch, and a group editing mode.
Youtuber Shadowfrax has joined Phaedo82 and others in the raid came business. This time it's 'A huge rocket raid that took place on That German Guy's server last week between The Catraz clan and The Bucket Brigade,' with Shadowfrax's eloquent and ridiculous take on the fight. That means he uses the word 'edifice', but also describes the base as a 'very angry hedgehog'. As for the raid, it's so large and so well-stocked that it has the whiff of a set-up, but you do get to see some interesting tactics, like the attackers looping rockets over the defences to take out the bottom of the sniper tower. There's some distance glitches in the rendering, but it's still a spectacular sight, and Shadowfrax's commentary is really silly and funny.
Quite a large amount of resources went into that. The futility of war and all that.
People can do amazing things with the tools we give them. Escape The Room is the first in a series of three videos--with the other two still to follow--that starts with four participants locked in different coloured rooms with codes on the walls. The group must communicate to escape the locked rooms, figuring out codes, where to get keys, what to spend resources on and where to build things, and more. It's a really interesting use of Rust.
There's some trouble with the camera and movement, which is a consequence of only having one point of view trying to take in all the action, so it's tough to follow, but it's great to see this sort of teamwork occurring in a very non-Rusty manner.
It could probably use some editing, to remove a lot of the aimless guessing, and I'd suggest a few more camera operators and less movement. Also, that ALT-TAB darkness issue makes the second half tough to see, but the idea is superb. More!
Rust is gaining a fair few celebrities, and because being famous is competitive sport, they met up to fight. Raid cam pioneer Phaedo82 and violent hobo Vertiigo took each other on in a rock fight. Why? I've no idea, but if you're going to do a rock fight then surely Argyle needs to be involved?
Anyway, the pair battled it out for pride
The battle didn't stop either of them from releasing new videos, though. Vertiigo is quite prolific, and he released a pair of videos alongside it. This one, where he makes what he claims is the 'Greatest Bow Shot Ever', is my favourite.
And Phaedo82 has pumped out half a dozen videos in the past week! Reviews, item tests, and, of course, a raid cam.
And Argyle? Well he tried to deliver pizza, for whatever reason.
Who knew pizza delivery would be so awkward?
A few ideas that caught my eye, recently. Reddit has been particularly good at coming up with new items and different designs. MrStonar imagined some new ladder designs and a flagpole, AKTE-KEAT came up with a Rusty telescope, and BlueSkilly thinks the painting tool could be used to customise guns and ammo.
Think you're working on something awesome? Tell me all about it. Now's the time to share your base designs, or get into the growing Raid Cam business.
There's a dedicated forum post, or you can fish for upvotes in the Subreddit. I also shuffle around the the Steam Community, so feel free to show me to things from there. You can follow and respond to Rust on Twitter, and I'm on there as well.
I can't respond to everything, but I read every comment and take it all in.
