Community Update 191

Things get weird with maps, so much art, and more.

I have a confession to make: I prefer Rust... weirder. It's why I'm excited about the recent SDK work. The maps that come out of it won't be governed by the physical laws that the procedural generation run by (aka: Andre's Edicts), but by the whims of the designers. You can see that with the first release of Dezinated's Rust Map Editor + Extended SDK, which resulted in the header image. The re-scaled domes are the perfect showcase for just how fucky things can get. You can hop on the map these next shots are from on the Staging branch: Salty Vanilla Custom Map Test. He invited Shadowfrax to walk around the whole map, and it reveals quite an Easter Egg. And that's on the normal end of things. Here's what happens when the buildings come completely unmoored from the map, and end up twisted in the sky. It took me a while to parse the first image. Excited? There's a couple of options if you want to help out. Dezinated has a patreon, and there's a Rust Map Maker's Discord.
You know how you sometimes don't notice something until it's gone? Like the buzzing of a lamp, or the anger and screaming of an Australian Youtuber attempting to dominate a server? We've missed you, Vertiigo. Especially when you're in the company of Ser Winter. You two are gold together. Here's Verts returning to Rust, and it goes as you'd expect it to. Gloriously! And here's Ser Winter's PoV. I love how failing is better than victory with you guys.
Strap in. There's more art than you can shake a pencil at, this week. There was some awesome character art: on the left, Jessica Freaxx crafted a lovely patreon reward for Chris Tufnell. And lil bucket (right) drafted a cannibal for no-one in particular. AthenaDesign kicked off a theme with some landscape art (and recorded the work that went into it): Then Arran-HS on the left, and Trakz5 on the right followed suit. In-game art was equally as awesome. Davidestavillo redrew a classic, and Futch's own work is great. You can even see it all come together. And finally, kathaar_ made the Frog Boots. Art was had.
As regular blog readers (hello, mum!) will know, I like Let's Plays that define their own challenges. Living off the Loot is just that: a playthrough where Faceless plays without gathering resources: no hitting nodes or trees, or harvesting (unless he plants it). He's just going to live off what he finds on the ground or on the bodies of players. Even with those restrictions, he manages to get a base started, and a weapon. More to come, via Rust Headquarters.
I've been too enamoured with the map work this week, so we only have the one build to show off. But it's a big one. The people of OzRust's EU server made a PvE city. Catraz. I'd love to walk lag around that one day.
Crashing through my Slack DMs and into your browser, here's Xtab with his latest round-up of the Steam Workshop skins. Oh look, another scary door.
And so, Banana Duck made this. Yes.
Think you're working on something awesome? Tell me all about it. Share your base designs, show off a game-mode from your server, or have you done a cool thing with boats? There's a dedicated forum, or you can fish for upvotes in the sub reddit. I also shuffle around the the Steam Community, so feel free to show me to things from there. You can follow and respond to Rust on Twitter, and I'm on there as well.
